Now that the election is over and, for the most part, we all know which political party will guide America through the crisis America is now encountering there will be those who will say “It’s up to them (Congress) now to fix America.” How dangerous that thinking is. The war for America’s soul is just beginning. Remember it took a strong leader, George Washington, and nearly eight years to win that ‘unwinnable war’ against the greatest army in the world at that time. Then it took more years to create America’s unique governing documents that led to our “land of the free and home of the brave.”

            Everyone, and I mean everyone, knows someone who is out of work, or worse, is facing foreclosure on their home. Several in my family are either under-employed or unemployed, even with what was once considered powerful educational credentials. Grandson Jason recently graduated with his degree in electrical engineering, a degree once considered to be a ticket to prosperity and permanent employment. Employers use to line up to court electrical engineers. Not anymore! He recently e-mailed me that he is lucky to still have a part time job. He also indicated he thought it was my generation that caused his generation the pain they are feeling. A grandson-in-law has his MBA degree in construction and we know what has happened to that industry – nonexistent. He, with four children, has been out of work for two years. It’s tough, very tough. I have another family member who once had a flourishing business now working for minimum wages waiting to start collecting his Social Security.

            I agree with Jason – my generation, while winning the external wars that then threatened our freedoms, allowed an internal enemy in, progressivism, who then, like termites, ate away at the very foundation of America’s freedoms – the Constitution, that now threatens America’s very existence.

In a way Glenn Beck’s new book, Broke, agrees with Jason too. I purchased and read Broke the first day it became available.. And I, without reservation, recommend that every American, especially Tea Party Patriots, concerned about the future of America purchase it – then not only read it, but study and ponder it. It is, in my opinion, destined to become a book that will help America restore itself to its former glory and prestige as a world leader. Beck’s book tells it like it really is. It’s scary!

Beck was able to reduce world history into a few chapters helping readers comprehend how the Romans, Greeks, and Spanish republics self-destructed after reaching their zenith of world power. It then outlines how America got into this economic mess and is followed by “A Plan” on how to get out of this mess and restore America to its past glory as an exporter of freedom and liberty to the world. Future generations of patriots will likely use Broke as a text book for restoring freedom to the people much like the Founding Fathers used Adam Smith’s “Wealth of Nations” as the textbook for America’s good life.

But I will go even further – I recommend that Broke be required reading for every individual, male or female, elected to public office. It is that powerful. I will also recommend that my own Congressman, Tom Price, use Broke as an additional text book, in addition to America’s Foundational Documents, the Declaration of Independence, the original Constitution, and the Bill of Rights, in his classes for fellow congressmen - with a goodly number of Broke books available for all members of Congress to read, study, and then begin to implement the needed changes.

In past columns I have often referred to “the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God,” words enshrined in the Declaration of Independence by Jefferson as the cornerstones of America’s freedoms. I now more fully comprehend how one of “the Laws of Nature” is the law of economics. Beck describes with clarity, including comprehendible charts and graphs, the natural law of economics, and when broken causes as much pain and suffering, maybe more, as the law of gravity does when broken.

Beck emphasizes that you, the individual, are key to America’s survival. Jefferson references God thrice in his Declaration. He closed his Declaration with “And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor.”

Can our generation do less? Relying on divine Providence America can win this internal war.
